After months of bizarre Tom Clancy announcements, a new Splinter Cell game may finally be in the works, according to an Insider.
There has not been a new Splinter Cell game since 2013. That's right, Sam Fisher has been in retirement for almost a decade now. Thus, it comes as a breath of fresh air that amongst the various ridiculous Tom Clancy games that have been announced recently, a new Splinter Cell game may be in development.
According to a number of leaks provided to Video Games Chronicle by Ubisoft insiders, a new Splinter Cell game has been greenlit by Ubisoft. The developers have not officially confirmed the validity of this leak, but for fans of the series, this is a pretty massive deal.
This new Splinter Cell game, which is currently untitled, will probably not be developed by Ubisoft Montreal, and is very early in its development. In addition, it could be getting an announcement in 2022. This is surprisingly soon, considering that we haven't heard a peep from Ubisoft, and it has been eight years since Splinter Cell Blacklist dropped back in the PS3 / Xbox 360 generation.
The utter lack of Splinter Cell games was addressed by Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft's CEO, in 2020. His explanation, that Splinter Cell had not seen a new game due to high pressure from series' fans to produce a perfect game, was quite nonsensical considering that the company has been moving forward with multiple projects - such as XDefiant and the recently announced Ghost Recon Frontline - that are clearly not what fans want out of the Tom Clancy licence.
Speaking of a potential future Splinter Cell game, Guillemot said that there was a lot of pressure for the brand to stay the same, but that it needed to evolve before they would move forward with it.
The last time we did a Splinter Cell, we had lots of pressure from all the fans actually saying, ‘Don’t change it, don’t do this, don’t do that,’ so some of the teams were more anxious to work on the brand... Now there are some things and some people that are now looking at the brand, taking care of the brand... so at one point you will see something, but I can’t say more than that.
That was basically a year ago now, and the new Splinter Cell game leaked to VGC by a Ubisoft insider would certainly fit what is being described. After all, Guillemot was not ruling out a future game for the series. Much the opposite, he was confirming that it would happen. An announcement as early as next year, though? We're not entirely sure how realistic that is, but if it is true, then we'll be falling off our seats with excitement.
