Recently revealed details for Overwatch 2 season 6 show that along with various game changes, player levels will be reintroduced, reminiscent of the original Overwatch experience.
To the disappointment of many fans, player levels have been gone from Overwatch since the update to Overwatch 2. It's unclear why Blizzard made this decision, but it seems like they have realized it wasn't the right choice. In their recent livestream about season 6, it appears that player levels will be reintroduced with a completely new design.
Overwatch 2: New Player Progression System
The new Overwatch 2 player progression system was recently revealed by Blizzard in the Invasion Reveal Livestream. The show was specifically held for the upcoming sixth season, which will bring more changes to the game than ever. With the new progression system, they will also reintroduce player levels, like the old Overwatch had them.
In the upcoming progression system, players will be able to earn experience points for each hero in different categories that resonate with their personal play style and the heroes' individual abilities.
Players can earn emblems for their performance while playing and will receive rewards as they progress through their heroes' journey.
In a recent Tweet, Aaron Keller clarified that this new progression system is not only allowing us to "level up" each hero individually, but it's also reintroducing basic player levels, like the ones we had in Overwatch 1.
Player levels are a part of this system as well. The sum total of your hero levels will contribute to your total player level. It was an oversight of me to not mention it on today's stream. I get nervous sometimes!

It seems like the new player levels are calculated by adding up all the levels of the heroes. This new progression and leveling system is expected to address a significant problem that many players had with the game, which is the feeling of not being rewarded for playing.
Previously, there was no way to earn levels for your profile or receive loot boxes, leaving only the battle pass as a somewhat worthwhile incentive to play. Unfortunately, even the battle pass has been problematic.
