A dedicated fan is developing a retro-styled 2D side-scrolling version of Resident Evil 4, and it looks magnificent! We have all the information you need.
Resident Evil is one of the most popular franchises around the globe. Capcom first introduced us to this virus-infested world in 1996, and since then they've released 8 main installments and several spin-offs.
In the last few years, their strategy has been largely one of producing remakes, but they do it very well. And the fanbase seem grateful of the way these old games have been handled; with genuine affection. Overall, this endeavor has been a great success.
Given the impressive sales figures, and newcomers to the franchise we're hearing about, it might even be true to say that a new love for this franchise has been kindled. Especially with the release of the most-highly-anticipated remake, Resident Evil 4.
One fan, however, has decided to produce their own remake of Leon S Kennedy's adventures, which is very different from the rest.
Resident Evil 4 2D Remake Based On Doom Engine
On the Doomworld website, forum member DooMero-21 shared a video of their latest project. They're making a 2D remake of Resident Evil 4 using the ZDoom engine, which is a modified version of the original Doom engine by id Tech.
This engine lets developers create retro-style games for modern hardware. Since it's based on a technology from 1993, it allows the game to look more like a title from PlayStation 1.

Resident Evil 4 2D Remake Gains Positive Reactions
The Resident Evil 4 2D Remake has been in development since 2016, but with a few breaks along the way. After the official Remake of the 4th installment released earlier this year, the developers of the 2D game found their motivation and should finish the project by the end of 2023.
Numerous updates have been released by now, but after the latest gameplay introduction on YouTube, this 2D Remake gets its well deserved recognition.
But see for yourself how well the result came out:
This fan creation isn't the first one you'll find on the internet. Fans usually get lucky because the official developer and publisher appreciate it as a form of admiration. However, there's always a chance they might take it down to protect their IP.
I hope they don't take any legal action against this fan-project. It's amazing how something you put your heart into can turn out so well!
Resident Evil 4 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
