It's not surprising, but still good news: Tekken 8 is in development, and there are some first leaks regarding the Tekken 8 roster, story, gameplay, and more.

Alright, y'all: 4Chan leak time. You know the deal – get the salt out and pinch that, because this stuff is obviously unconfirmed. Here's the original sauce for what's cooking here, and I'm just gonna quote the best bits for you and throw in unnecessary commentary in between. In case you're wondering, one thing off the bat: Tekken 8 has been in development simultaneously to the last Tekken 7 DLC. Alright, now without further ado...:

Tekken 8 Story Leak

This is Heihachi's last game, and Kazuya will replace him as a "permanent big bad" -- Harada sees Smash as a big boost for the character's popularity, and the main conflict will be about Kazuya vs. Jin. Bryan loses an eye. I'm not sure why

Look at Smash making waves, and influencing everybody. First, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl started capitalizing on the platform-fighter popularity, now Warner Bros is rumored to get in on the action, and now the Tekken big boss admits that a Smash crossover is influencing the direction of the franchise.

Tekken 8 Gameplay Leak

As for gameplay changes, the leaker claims the following:

  • Not every character has a power crush, the moves are still there, but properties are getting changed (e.g. Hwaorang's)
  • Wavedash-esque movement mechanics are getting introduced to more characters, overall movement complexity is encouraged
  • Tutorials will introduce players to Korean backdashes
  • There is a new "clinching" mechanic that's somewhat similar to the clashing in Soul Calibur 6 that gives characters more grappling options. I'm not sure how it controls, but characters will have unique options in clinches for strikes, takedowns (like trips), etc.

Loving the sound of the clinch. As much as I hate to watch clinching in real combat sports, it does add layers of strategy, that are more than welcome. Looks like Tekken is about to get even more complex...

Tekken 8 Roster Leak – Zagreus from Hades Joins Tekken 8

  • The current planned roster is 24 characters, though they may cut it down to 22 - they are actively discussing whether to merge Jin and Devil Jin into the same character, and whether to include a second Jack
  • Lars is not returning but may be DLC down the line
  • Gigas is cut
  • Katarina is cut
  • Shaheen is cut
  • Lucky Chloe is back
  • Fahk is back and is important to story
  • I assume Lee is back
  • One guest character on release - Zagreus from Hades. Yes, dead serious. Harada loves the game and uses some of Noctis' attacks as a blueprint.

Yes. Zagreus is part of Tekken 8, and I'm loving it. If you haven't played Hades, then it might not be immediately evident why, and you should definitely rectify that blunder – the game's amazing. For all those who are familiar with Hades... I'll say this: I feel like Zagreus would be more at home in Soul Calibur, but I'm not gonna complain seeing him become a part of the Tekken family.
