Terraria is one of the most popular sandbox games of the last decade, right after Minecraft. The developers already announced the last patch several times over. But they just can't stop updating the game. Here is why.
Terraria was released back in May 2011, since then the game has become one of the most successful sandbox open world games, mainly surpassed by the industry leader and pop culture icon Minecraft. And it got continued support by the developers, even though there were several attempts to have THE final update. But the devs simply couldn't stop providing new content.
Terraria: Devs Simply Can't Stop Updating The Game
In the last decade, Terraria has become one of the most beloved sand-box open world games and gathered a very dedicated community. One reason for the success is the ongoing updating of the game by the developer studio Re-Logic. For the last 12 years, constant updates provided new content and features to keep the community interested and engaged.
And the success speaks for itself, the reviews on Steam are "overwhelmingly positive" and the game apparently sold 44.5 million copies worldwide. But there were points in Terraria's history, where THE final patch was planned. But the devs simply couldn't stop. And the reasons behind this are easy to understand. Terraria is just too successful.
This was stated by Re-Logic's Andrew Spinks on Twitter, prior to his exit from the social media website.
"After twelve years, the game still sells like hot cakes. There is so much demand it makes it hard to move on.", Spinks tweeted according to PCGamer.com.
And according to the devs, there is still more to come. So it seems like the story of Terraria will continue. Let's see if they manage another 12 years, full of updates and new content.
Patch 1.4.5 Features A Big Crossover
The upcoming 1.4.5 patch for Terraria is set to release in 2023 and will focus on crossover-content with Dead Cells, a popular 2D rogue-lite title. In the official Terraria forum, the developers stated:
We are closing in on the last stages of 1.4.5 development, and we hope that we will be able to have the latest version of Terraria in everyone's hands soon. [...] The team is in the final push towards the end of content additions and turning a more careful eye towards fixes and balance for the remainder of 1.4.5's development cycle. This phase is always tough to predict timing-wise, as it really depends on how many issues we find and how hard they are to address. That said, we do not think it will be much longer until we will be able to provide a more definitive time window.
In the patch, Re-Logic will introduce some changes to the character creation screen and the world seeds. Also, Terraria will have three new languages with Japanese, Korean and (potentially) Traditional Chinese, which the devs describe as "a pretty monumental task". Besides, a new weapon, the Shimmer Water Gun, was announced. This gun will transform NPCs.
Further details were not provided in the forum posts. But it's safe to say, by looking at the history of Terraria patches, that this one won't disappoint the dedicated community either.
