A new job listing suggests that the standalone multiplayer The Last of Us game could be free to play.
We know that Naughty Dog is working on a standalone multiplayer game based on The Last of Us . But so far, we haven’t heard anything about the game, except that it’s in development. Now we got an interesting hint on what the game could look like: A new job listing on the Naughty Dog website suggests, that the multiplayer off-shoot to The Last of Us could be free to play.
The Last of Us Multiplayer As "AAA Free to Play" Game? Fortnite Designer Hired By Naughty Dog
Under the title of “Live Ops Producer”, Naughty Dog is looking for someone with “proven experience in a production role supporting a AAA, free to play, live title”. So, Naughty Dog is definitely working on a free to play game, then. And while the job listing doesn’t name The Last of Us, this most likely refers to the standalone multiplayer game.

Whoever will be hired as Live Ops Producer will most likely join up with former Senior Systems Designer for Fortnite, Anders Howard. After 7 years at Epic Games, a lot of which he spent developing the Battle Pass system for Fortnite, Howard has joined Naughty Dog as a Principal Monetization Designer. Will he also work on a free-to-play game, like Fortnite, there? It seems likely that he would use his expertise to help Naughty Dog out with this project.
Like we said, we didn't hear anything about this game yet, so this is still just speculation. But it is also the only Naughty Dog project we know about, which fits the description. Other rumors only referred to new single player games, like a fantasy title or an action game inspired by the film Moonlight.
We will get a full reveal of the game in 2023, so we will have to wait for at least a few months to see if the new The Last of Us multiplayer is actually free to play. We expect that it will be, as it is the most popular model currently. Even games like Overwatch 2 have gone free to play after being full price before.
