The Witcher 4 has been confirmed to be starting a new saga in the Witcher universe.
CDPR already confirmed that The Witcher 4 would not continue the story that The Witcher 3 ended - that story is going to stay... ended. Now, they confirmed more than that - though, to be fair, we all assumed it anyway: The Witcher 4 will be the beginning of an entirely new Witcher Saga.
Witcher 4 Will Reboot the Series
Now don't go panic mode just yet - Witcher 4 is going to reboot the series in the sense that new fans will find the game accessible without having to play the previous Witcher games. That does not mean that The Witcher 3 will be faded into Oblivion, and I'm sure The Witcher 4 will still have the odd reference to Geralt's adventures.
Tech Radar first broke the news, when CDPR CEO Adam Kicinski revealed the studio's plan in an earnings call, where he called the upcoming game a second Witcher saga:
There will be a new saga. Now, we are pre-producing the first game of this saga, but we have in mind more than one. The first saga was three games, so now we are thinking about more than one game."
Also, we know that The Witcher 4 will run on Unreal Engine 5 - this is notable because the previous didn't run on any Unreal Engine, instead they used the REDengine. Not that we mind, after all everything we've seen from Unreal Engine 5 so far looks beautiful, especially this absolutely stunning fan-made Witcher 4 trailer.
