Swen Vincke, CEO of Larian and director of Baldur’s Gate 3, revealed that he is already working on the follow-up to 2023’s game of the year.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was the biggest sensation of 2023, coming out of nowhere and conquering hearts, minds, sales charts and awards shows. While many people are still deep into this huge RPG, it looks like a follow-up is already being worked on.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Director Shares Update On Next Larian Game
Swen Vincke, the CEO/founder of Larian Studio and director of Baldur’s Gate 3, revealed on Twitter that he is in the middle of writing his next game. Apparently, it took him “4 months of rewriting and rewriting and abandoning ideas and then revisiting them”, but it looks like the creative head of Larian finally found a breakthrough.
“[I] finally figured out what act 1 on this thing I've been working on needs to be. Quote me when it's revealed to see how much of today's draft survives. I suspect a lot.“
Been a great morning! After 4 months of rewriting and rewriting and abandoning ideas and then revisiting them, finally figured out what act 1 on this thing I've been working on needs to be. Quote me when it's revealed to see how much of today's draft survives. I suspect a lot.

This is pretty exciting! Baldur‘s Gate 3 has some of the best writing ever seen in any video game, so I can’t wait to see what Vincke comes up with next. He remains coy about revealing too much on what that could be, though, as he emphasizes that this is “not what you think and this is not an teaser for an announcement.” So, is this maybe not a fantasy game? Or does he refer to this just being out side of the Dungeons and Dragons universe that Baldur’s Gate is based on?
Whatever it is, it looks like it will still take a while for us to see it. Baldur’s Gate 3 was developed for over six years and continues to be strongly supported by Larian. We expect that the follow-up will take at least as long, if not longer, to be finished. Larian… take your time. If their next game is even half as good as BG3, it will be worth the wait.
