GTA 6 will finally be released in 2025. By the time the game comes out, Nintendo will probably have released their next-gen version of the Nintendo Switch console. Naturally, the question arises, if GTA 6 would be playable on the Nintendo Switch 2. Here is what experts say about this.
With the highly anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) scheduled for 2025, gaming fans are already wondering whether GTA 6 will be compatible with the next generation of Nintendo consoles. As it is likely that Nintendo will launch an improved console on the market at that time, the burning question is: Will GTA 6 be playable on the Nintendo Switch 2?
GTA 6 On Nintendo Switch 2 – Can We Expect A Port?
In a recent special episode of Digital Foundry, Rich, Oliver and Alex tackled a few questions on the upcoming GTA 6 release, including whether a port for the next Nintendo Switch would be possible.
Since GTA 6 comes out in 2025, it is likely that Nintendo releases their next-gen console around the same time. While, of course, there is no way we would ever see GTA 6 on the current Switch, the next generation is said to make a huge jump in terms of performance.
Rich, who has been in the games business for over 30 years, has strong doubts about the Switch 2 port:
"The Switch 2 is gonna have a proper generational leap and is forward looking in many ways, but the stuff that they're rolling out for GTA 6 is possibly beyond that." ~ Richard Leadbetter (Digital Foundry)
Oliver Mackenzie, another expert in the topic, added his thoughts on why exactly the Nintendo Switch 2 won't be able to pull off GTA 6.
"The problem here is that you've got a lighting model that might not have a good non-rt fallback and the Switch is not going to be powerful enough to run all that ray tracing. I just cannot see it" ~ Oliver Mackenzie
Another thing to note here is that Rockstar hasn't ported many of their games to the Nintendo Switch. Most notably, there's mainly only Red Dead Redemption 1 and the GTA trilogy so far. Since these games are already quite old, it appears that the current Switch couldn't handle a port of Rockstar's more recent games, or maybe it just wasn't worth it.
So, seeing future Rockstar titles on a Nintendo console seems unrealistic, even with updated hardware.
