League of Legends VGU 2023: Champions, Polls & More

League of Legends is constantly switching things up by refreshing older champions. We know we will be getting a few VGU's this year as well, but what options are there?

You can complain about League of Legends as much as you want, but one thing you can't say is that they don't care about refreshing old champions. Each year, we get at least one, sometimes even 2, VGUs.

So, since we know the Udyr rework will ship this year, and we might be getting a second mystery VGU, it's time to vote on the VGU for 2023. Which champions do we have that are in need of a rework?

What Does VGU Mean?

VGU stands for 'Visual Gameplay Update' and describes the process of renewing an old champion to make them viable in the current LoL landscape. This process has multiple steps, such as experimentation, design and balance changes. Sometimes even lore gets changed to fit into the world of Runeterra.

Overall, the process for a VGU can take around 9 months. Basically, it's just a pregnancy where a champion is being reborn anew if we want to be very graphic. Sure, a champion's identity should stay the same, but some of their abilities have to be re-worked completely like with Volibear.

Which Champions Could Get a VGU in 2023?

The choice of champions encompasses those champions that Riot feels are the least likely to fit into the current League of Legends meta. These are the choices for the 2023 VGU:

  • Kog’Maw
  • Tryndamere
  • Skarner
  • Nocturne
  • Shyvana

Isn't there someone missing? Maybe a certain insane clown? Yes, Shaco is not on the list for VGU updates, but there are a few other champions we wish Riot would have included.

How Does the VGU Poll Work?

Riot will probably reveal the details for the VGU poll during their Season 2022 livestream on January 7, 2022. Usually, though, there is an extra tab in the client where you can vote for the champion you want to get a VGU.

It's nice that Riot continuously lets us choose which champions we want to have reworked, but with 5 champions as a choice, there isn't really much we can vote on. Taric, Amumu, Rammus, Shaco, all of these are names that could also be added to the VGU list. But enough whining, we should be happy to even get a say in what we want to happen to the game at all.
