After the remaster of the original Tomb Raider trilogy, a real Tomb Raider tabletop RPG has now been announced.
Thanks to the success of the Netflix series Stranger Things and Baldur's Gate 3, many should be familiar with the tabletop universe of Dungeons and Dragons by now. Gathering with friends for a tabletop role-playing game is no longer a retro hobby. Of course, you're not limited to fantasy stories but can immerse yourselves in any world you can imagine. Soon, one of these worlds will be the one of Tomb Raider.
Tomb Raider Will Release Its Own Tabletop RPG
In a typical tabletop RPG, you and your friends each take on a role with specific abilities and a unique background story. A game master guides you through the adventure, describing what you see and what happens in the game world. They also embody the NPCs with whom you can interact. In this way, you use your imagination to explore the world and experience adventures. A rulebook is designed to provide you with a framework within which you can navigate your game.
Crystal Dynamics, the developers of the Tomb Raider games, have now partnered with the board game publisher Evil Hat Productions to release an RPG rulebook for the Tomb Raider brand.
The rulebook that you'll use to embark on the Tomb Raider adventure is called Shadows of Truth.
Here, you take on the role of Truth Seekers, colleagues of the legendary archaeologist Lara Croft, who set out to bring long-hidden knowledge to light and stop villains who seek to exploit valuable magical artifacts for their own gain. The game is designed for 3–6 players. All you need to play is the rulebook, pens and paper, and at least six-sided dice. However, it's much cooler to play with actual role-playing dice.
Unfortunately, before you can start gathering your fellow Truth Seekers, you'll have to wait a bit longer until the finished game hits the market. According to Evil Hat, an open playtest will begin soon, and production is slated to start in 2025.
Until then, you can also try out other adventures from Evil Hat or simply start a new run in Baldur's Gate 3. With that, you're probably busy for a while anyway.
