If you’re waiting for Ghost of Tsushima 2, Horizon 3 or the next God of War, then you might want to get comfy. Sony Interactive Entertainment just revealed, that no “new major existing franchise titles” are planned to release within the next fiscal year. That period starts on April 1, 2024, and ends on March 31, 2025.

This was revealed by Hiroki Totoki, a man of many titles at Sony. The Director, President, COO and CFO, Representative Corporate Executive Officer of Sony Group Corporation talked about the future of PlayStation during a new Sony earnings briefing, revealing the sad news.

PlayStation Hits Aren’t Getting Sequels Until March 2025

Totoki clarified, that by “major existing franchise titles” he means games such as God of War Ragnarök or Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. We can probably count Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon, two of Sony’s biggest franchises, in here as well. While The Last of Us 3 has been confirmed, that will take many more years to come out anyway.

It looks like PlayStation-owners will have to look forward to other titles then. It looks like some of the live-service offerings, like Concord, will hit the console in that period, and we’re getting an Until Dawn remake as well. Otherwise, it does look like a pretty dry year for the PlayStation 5.

The console might even be marching towards its end. Totoki stated that the console is “entering the latter half of the console cycle”, which is somewhat alarming to hear. Sure, the PS5 came out in November 2020, so it is already in its fourth year of existing. However, due to a low number of exclusive games and somewhat marginal differences to the PlayStation 4, it still feels like this generation hasn’t really fully started yet.

The overall picture Sony is painting here doesn’t look too bright. Said dry period, the next fiscal year of 2025, is predicted to see a gradual decline in hardware sales and a decrease in software sales. Due to disappointing sales of the console, the target for the current fiscal year has been adjusted from 25 million sold units to 21 million.

What do you think about Sony’s future? Does it look bleak, or is this not as bad as it might look? Let us know in the comments!
