Step aside, Spider-Man and God of War: We have a new king of Sony games on PC.
There are multiple iconic Sony games that have made their way from the PlayStation to the PC in recent history. Among the biggest titles have been God of War, Spider-Man, and The Last of Us, but what if we told you those aren't the titles with the biggest player counts on Steam? You'd be shocked, eh?
Well, the recent release of Helldivers 2 has dethroned the original record holder by double. Who would have thought that the co-op shooter could reign in so many concurrent players upon release?
Helldivers 2 Most Popular Sony Game Ever Upon Release
Helldivers 2 recently released on Steam for everyone to play and enjoy. The game had such high demand that the servers were wrecked with issues and outages, which left players desperate and frustrated. Even amidst such a messy start, it still managed to reach new records for a Sony game upon release.
Helldivers 2, even with technical issues, hit a peak of 155,000 players on the game's first weekend. This peak has since gone up, with over 196,000 players playing Helldivers 2 according to steamdb. Second place behind Helldivers 2? None other than God of War, which reached a peak of just over 70,000 concurrent players.
Of course, it is important to note that Helldivers 2 is the first game to release simultaneously on PlayStation as well as on PC. Games like God of War or even Spider-Man, which sits even further down, were released far later on PC and had been playable on the PlayStation for a while beforehand.
The hype of a simultaneous release has probably helped push Helldivers 2 so high up on the list. This is just a sign for Sony to release games on multiple platforms more often right off the bat, no?
