A new mixed-genre horror game called Withering Rooms is doing a lot of things differently. But it seems to be working.

A hidden horror gem has been haunting PC, PS5, and Xbox since April 5: Withering Rooms. It may not seem like much at first glance, being a 2.5D horror sidescroller set in a creepy Victorian mansion. However, as seen in the trailer, the game is packed with thrilling monsters, and the gameplay seems to impress, at least judging by its Steam ratings.

Mixed Genre Horror Game Has The Best Of Many Worlds

Coming out of nowhere, the horror genre mashup Withering Rooms is still relatively unknown, but those who play it are thoroughly impressed. It's a 2.5D horror RPG with survival, souls, and roguelike elements.

The twist: The mansion's rooms change every night, making it pointless to memorize its labyrinthine corridors. With each run, you'll discover more weapons, tools, outfits, and spells to use, such as setting hex traps on closet doors, enchanting armor to help you, or creating a decoy impersonation of yourself that grows more powerful.

But escaping the mansion won't be easy, with 80 different monsters and bosses lurking, including overgrown undead, invisible ghosts, devious witches, and axe-wielding maniacs. In addition to enemies, you'll also encounter friends, merchants and NPCs, including potential tricksters, requiring constant vigilance!

With a 95 percent thumbs up rating on Steam, Withering Rooms earns a "very positive" stamp. Reviewers are hailing it as a "love letter to old-school horror games."
