Despite initially rejecting the idea, Barbie director Greta Gerwig has stated that she is open to doing a Barbie sequel.
In 2023, two blockbusters were released: Barbie and Oppenheimer. Both movies were incredibly successful, with Barbie being the best-selling movie of the year and ranking 14th among the most commercially successful movies of all time.
Even though Barbie only won one award out of eight nominations at the latest Oscars (Oppenheimer won seven), it surely still deserves a sequel on artistic grounds. And given the commercial success, a second Barbie movie may not be far away. After all, with enough imagination, life is your creation – why not a second Barbie movie? Although Greta Gerwig stated in 2023 that the chances of her making a Barbie sequel were 'totally at zero', it appears that the director is now open to the idea of a second film.
Will There Be A Barbie Sequel?
In an interview with Deadline, the director of Barbie Greta Gerwig stated that she is now open to making a sequel. "I'm not dismissing it. I want to do it," she says. However, there will be a lot to discuss with Mattel, Margot Robbie, Warner Bros. Discovery, producer David Heyman and all of her creative collaborators first.
Although it sounds promising, we'll have to wait a while. Next, Greta Gerwig will direct at least two new "Narnia" movies for Netflix. But as we all know, anticipation is the greatest joy – so let's wait and see.
