Patty Jenkins has revealed that her project, Rogue Squadron, is back on track and that we are finally going to be getting a fighter pilot Star Wars spinoff soon.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was revealed a while ago, but has since been shelved by Lucasfilm and Disney because director Patty Jenkins was busy working on other projects. She's been a part of the Wonder Woman movies which seemed to have taken precedence over this Star Wars project.
In an interview with the Talking Pictures podcast, she revealed that the project is back and that her Star Wars movie has started development once more.
Star Wars: Rogue Squadron Back In Development
Wonder Woman 3 seems to have been iced with the new DC Universe in development under James Gunn, which means that Patty Jenkins has more time than before. She explained in an interview that her schedule has opened up, and she's started writing a draft for the pilot-focused movie from the Star Wars universe.
It seems that it was Jenkins' plan all along to get back to Star Wars once Wonder Woman 3 was finished anyway, with her explaining that a deal had been made even before she moved to the Wonder Woman 3 project.
When I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, [Jenkins and Lucafilm] talked about, ‘Well, maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3,’ so we started a deal for that to happen.
According to Jenkins, her and Lucasfilm struck a deal right as the SAG-AFTRA strikes begun. She is now writing the movie, since she owes Lucasfilm a script. So, the movie is still in very early stages of development, but at least it is a life sign for the project, which many had thought was iced by Disney and Lucasfilm.
The film was first announced in 2020, but the project hit an indefinite delay in 2021 which only resulted in it being canceled completely. Hopefully this time around, we actually get the finished project, because a fighter pilot-themed Star Wars show actually sounds super fun.
