Almost time for the next part of the spy thriller series: Season 4 of Slow Horses is almost here on Apple TV+. We've got all the details covered, including the expected release date, the returning cast, a little tease about the plot and any other news you could possibly need.
Unorthodox, unconventional, and yet fascinating: Jackson Lamb rallies up his gang of Slow Horses to tackle season 4 of the spy thriller show on Apple TV+, written for TV by none other than Will Smith.
Based on the book series by Mick Herron, Slow Horses follows a group of intelligence agents who have messed up their careers in one way or another and hence being relegated to the department known as "Slough House."
If you're like me (meaning: impatient) you might want to consider reading the books, especially if you books with witty writing. Bonus points for the intricate plots! Here's the complete book series and here's what's coming up on Apple TV+: the fourth entry in the series, Spook Street .
Here's what shenanigans the Slow Horses get up to next, when to expect it and, of course, who's returning to grace our screens.
Slow Horses Season 4: The Plot Of Spook Street
Don't worry, I won't spoil anything major – if you don't even want to know the gist of what's to come, you might want to skip this part.
There are obviously some loose ends still needing a solution back from the third season's finale and as Will Smith put it in an interview: "Where it ends in season three, where Taverner thinks she's got what she wants, let's just say there's a recalibration of that at the start of the next series."
And remember River's documents? Yeah, that's gonna be a thing, too. According to Smith, "there's repercussions [from River's leak], but they're more left field than directly to do with what he leaks."
So, the Slow Horses have enough to deal with, right? Wrong. The next book in the series, Spook Street and source material for season 4, revolves around a terrorist attack in London where a suicide bomber detonates himself in a crowded shopping area. The incident appears to be connected to a Cold War-era bomb that never exploded. The intelligence community is alarmed by the resurgence of such an old threat.
Or, as the book synopsis reads:
What happens when an old spook loses his mind? Does the Service have a retirement home for those who know too many secrets but don’t remember they’re secret? Or does someone take care of the senile spy for good? These are the paranoid concerns of David Cartwright, a Cold War–era operative and one-time head of MI5 who is sliding into dementia, and questions his grandson, River, must figure out answers to now that the spy who raised him has started to forget to wear pants. But River, himself an agent at Slough House, MI5’s outpost for disgraced spies, has other things to worry about. A bomb has detonated in the middle of a busy shopping center and killed forty innocent civilians. The “slow horses” of Slough House must figure out who is behind this act of terror before the situation escalates.
Sounds like we're up for some pretty heavy topics to tackle, doesn't it? But when can we see all of that unfold on our screens?
Slow Horses Season 4: Expected Release Date
Sadly, Apple TV+ has yet to reveal an official release date. That doesn't stop us from doing some detective work ourselves though and follow some clues to determine when it's time to get back into the action.
Season 4 has been shot back in spring of 2023, so that's all done, leaving post-production to do their thing now. According to Smith, Slow Horses is a "well-oiled machine" – that sounds pretty promising.
We're pretty positive Slow Horses Season 4 will come to Apple TV+ in 2024. Showrunner Will Smith recently made it pretty easy on himself, saying the show should be released by late December 2024. Well, duh.
Slow Horses Season 4: Spook Street's Cast
Do I even need to say it? Obviously, Gary Oldman will return as our favorite leader of Slough House Jackson Lamb to shower his team in compliments, build up their self-esteem and not be cynical, ever. Not. I mean, yes, he returns, but you know how Mr. Lamb is...
The Cartwrights, River and his grandfather David, will be portrayed by Jack Lowden and Jonathan Pryce, respectively. Kristin Scott Thomas returns as Taverner, Saskia Reeves as Catherine Standish and Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Shirley Dander.
We can also look forward to Christopher Chung as Roddy Ho, Kadiff Kirwan as Marcus Longridge and Rosalind Eleazar as Louisa Guy.
Until Slow Horses comes back to Apple TV+, you might want to kill some time by checking out which other shows are gearing up for their next season or new shows to get excited about.
