The iconic Sonic the Hedgehog returns at high speed! Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming Sonic 3, including the release date, cast and plot.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to release in 2024, continuing the story of the iconic Sega mascot – not that huge of a surprise, considering the teaser we got in the credits of Sonic 2.
We've gathered everything you need to know about the upcoming movie, so let's not waste any time and jump right in!
Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Release Date
As long as there aren't any unforeseen tragedies (excuse my dramatic choice of words), Sonic 3 is set to hit theaters on December 20, 2024.

Sonic, Knuckles and Tails aren't the only ones to return to the big screens, though. Are you ready for Shadow the Hedgehog?
Shadow Joins The Cast In Sonic the Hedgehog 3
I'm sure I'm not the only one who's excited for Shadow the Hedgehog to join in on the fun, surely causing some new problems for Sonic and his friends. Introducing him – or much rather, teasing his future involvement – at the end of Sonic 2 has been exciting for lots of fans.
Director Jeff Fowler himself is just as excited, as he shared in an interview:
I'm hesitant to go into too much detail, only because it's obviously still very early. I will say that we are teasing a character that I'm incredibly excited about. It's very personal to me as a fan.
That was even before Sonic 2 hit the big screens and Fowler was nearly giddy with excitement to just tease Shadow to the fans, and as a fan himself, chances are he'll do the dark Hedgehog and his obvious edginess justice.
And Shadow might just be the thing the third movie needs, as another big figure probably won't return.
Shadow May Join, But Jim Carrey Leaves
Jim Carrey has announced his retirement from acting after the release of Sonic 2, so it's pretty unlikely he returns to play Dr. Robotnik again. Although he probably made his escape in the last movie, it's anyone's guess at this point if Dr. Robotnik is going to return in Sonic 3. He'd need to be recast and Paramount hasn't made any announcements for a new Doc, so chances are we'll go on without him.
But the voices should all return: Ben Schwartz as Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles and Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Tails. Along with them, James Marsden should return as Tom Wachowski.
The voice of Shadow is yet to be revealed, but we'll make sure to keep you updated on that!
