This Is Us: Creator Dan Fogelman Talks About Spin-Offs

With an equally beautiful and absolutely devastating show like This Is Us coming to an end, there's always the same questions to answer: are we getting another season? How about a spin-off? The show's creator Dan Fogelman has the answers.

For six seasons, This Is Us has brought audiences to tears for various reasons: heartbreak, joy, anger, sadness, relief, you name it. The show has perfected the art of building fans up, giving them characters to root for and hope and pray, and then breaking them all down into a thousand tiny little pieces until there's nothing more than a crying puddle left on the floor.

It's safe to say creator Dan Fogelman knows how to play with audiences' emotions. He surely played mine like a fiddle. But before you go any further, just in case: spoiler warning!

At the end of season 6, the Big Three had to say goodbye to Rebecca. As hard as that was, life needs to go on, right? Question is: are we going to see it in a possible spin-off? Creator Dan Fogelman sat down with Deadline and answered the most burning question.

Is There Going To Be A “This Is Us” Spin-Off?

I'm going to make this quick: Dan Fogelman is “pretty set on this being it.” Not sure how to feel about not being reduced to tears with each episode anymore, but one thing's for certain: Fogelman knows best, and he has proven so time and time again.

My well is pretty dry right now, and I think we wanted to end the show when we felt we were at our creative strong point before it got too tiring and too hard for us to come up with ways to keep it special and interesting.

Granted, there are still lots of stories to tell, and the Big Three probably still face countless challenges that would be worth watching, and don't even get me started on their kids. That's the thing, though: you could go on and on, always want more, until we're eight generations deep, and we're watching This Is Us season 82 on holographic screens.

Chances are the writing isn't what it used to be at that point, though. While it's sad to be left guessing how Randall, Kevin and Kate live the rest of their lives now, it's always better to end a show on a high note instead of going on with it until the magic of the story is totally lost.
