It's 2022 and sometimes we just want to play our childhood favorite games on the PC, right? Right. And thanks to some fans, you can make that dream a reality. This is how you can play Zelda on your PC.
Not too long ago we got to see just how epic Ocarina of Time is on the PC thanks to a fan project bringing this classic to the computer. Well, for all of you who love Zelda, the fun doesn't end there because there is also a "reverse-engineered clone" of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past out there.
Yes, sadly Nintendo isn't making these classics for PC themselves, instead we've got a dedicated fanbase feeding us the nutrients we need so we can play our favorite old school games on the PC. Though it does require a bit of work.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on PC Thanks to Fans
This game clone of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past comes from Github user snesrev. If you've still got a copy of the original game, then you will be able to use that to play through the entire game on your PC. You will have to extract the levels and images though to compile them with the code available on snesrev's Github though – otherwise it would be slightly illegal and we're not here for that.
Is there a PC Port for Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past?
Unfortunately, there is no PC Port just yet. Though, the community did come together to make Ocarina of Time available on PC pretty quickly once the game got decompiled, so we could be seeing an easier to use PC version of A Link to the Past soon.
The fan-port of Ocarina of Time has also upgraded the original by giving it adjustable climbing sped, widescreen support and much more, which could all be possible for A Long to the Past as well if a fan port of the game was to be made.
There are a lot of possibilities out there with what fans can do for the game. We already know that there are some fun randomizing options, but playing them with your ROM can be difficult. A PC port version could make it a lot easier to randomize the world and events simply by coding it into the game that whenever you press 'start new game' a newly generated random world will appear.
So, while yes, you can already play The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on your PC, it requires you to own the original ROM, as well as some skill to have all the levels and images imported. Hopefully we get a version of the game like we did for Ocarina of Time.
