Starfield: How Romance Works
To make things clear, there are no gender restriction in Starfield. The gender isn't important at all and has no impact on the main story. No matter what gender you choose from, you're free to pick any companion you like to pursue a romantic relationship with.
Once you met your chosen one, be sure to invite them to your explorations or missions in the galaxy. As you're able to only bring one of them to your missions, be sure to switch out the characters if you met your desired companion, to pursue the romance.
Starfield: How To Marry/Divorce
You can marry your companions in Starfield if you increase your affinity to a certain, invisible level. Marriage is considered the final stage of romancing a character and will prompt you different dialogue options. Your chosen one will also grant you a personal wedding gift and share the bed from now on...
.... and if you realize that you made the wrong choice and your heart belongs to someone else, you have the option to end your marriage. Just choose the option during a normal talk with your former special someone and end it.
Afterward, you can pursue another character without fearing to be punished for this action!
Starfield: Gain Love Interest Approval
To gain the approval of your companions, you need to talk with them during your missions. They will eventually ask to speak with you, and there is your chance to make things more interesting!
These little "Missions" are displayed in your "Activities", so don't overlook them! During the conversations, be sure to always pick the "flirt" option whenever you have a personal chat with one of them. This will strengthen your bond and unlocks further conversation options.
But remember: Pay attention to what your desired character likes and dislikes. You'll eventually hit a roadblock (metaphorically speaking) if you keep doing things they don't like. And it will take much longer to progress the relationship.
In the next section, you'll learn all about what your Love Interest Likes and Dislikes, so you won't have any problems bonding with them!
