Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical will release soon – if you're curious about what the Telltale-esque game will have to offer in terms of plot, gameplay and even more, you've come to the right place.
You know how lots of popular TV shows have musical episodes? Stray Gods takes that energy into the video game world and dials it up a notch. After successful crowdfunding, developers Summerfall Studios teamed up with publisher Humble Games to fuse musicals with video games.
The game's story is written by David Gaider who also was the lead writer on the Dragon Age series – pretty sure he knows what he's doing. The musical score was done by Austin Wintory, known for his amazing work on games like Flow and Journey with a Grammy nomination to back it up.
Seems like the idea of a musical video game has been in the best hands, right? Let's dive into it and see what we can expect exactly!
Stray Gods: Release Date
Release day for Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical is gonna be on August 10, 2023. The narrative adventure will be available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and Windows.
Sadly, there's no pre-ordering available just yet, but here's where you can get in on Steam. You know what else you could get, though? This gem right here – it's no musical, but the vibes and looks kinda match, don't you think?
Stray Gods: Plot & Gameplay
See, the plot is a little bit tricky. As a roleplay-narrative-adventure, there are lots of different ways the story could turn out with its branching paths depending on your choices.
A few things are for sure, though: you play as Grace who's accused of murdering Calliope, the last muse. Accused by ancient Greek Gods, that is. And you only got seven days to prove your innocence while also coming to terms with the fact that, apparently, you're magic as well with your newly-aquired musical powers.
Making music not only a part of a game, but its core mechanic brings quite a few challenges as it turns out. You'll make your choices mid-song, meaning the lyrics and melody and narrative outcome will change as you go, resulting in multiple songs with... well, a bunch of different versions.
The whole game engine had to be reworked in order to even make that possible. The effort that was put into this game is absolutely nuts for that reason alone.
