After the new Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, "Phantom Liberty", came out earlier this year, about half of the CD Projekt Red team shifted their attention to the next project, codenamed "Polaris", which is now their main focus! But it will take some time.
In CD Projekt Red's latest earnings report, it was disclosed that nearly half of the developers were dedicated to Cyberpunk 2077. With the game now concluded and no additional content in development, these team members are shifting their focus to other projects within CD Projekt Red.
As of July 2023, the "Polaris" project had a team of almost 260 developers. CEO Adam Kicinski stated that they anticipate the team to grow to over 400 developers by mid-2024, aiming to enhance their efforts and concentrate on future endeavors.
The Witcher 4 Is Still Some Time Away
While more than half of the developers are now focusing on project Polaris, it doesn't mean the game will be released anytime soon. Considering the usual development time for modern games, it might take up to 5 or even more years before we get any news about a possible release date, especially since Polaris was only announced in March 2022.
Apart from Polaris, other developers at CD Projekt Red are either working on supporting Cyberpunk 2077, the "Sirius" project, Gwent-related projects, and more. All the teams are working on exciting things, but we'll have to be patient to learn more about the projects.
If CD Projekt Red can maintain the quality they delivered in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, without encountering the issues they had at the release of Cyberpunk 2077, there's a good chance that we'll be in for a treat when they decide to showcase their work!
