The Hylian Shield is characteristic for the Zelda series since Ocarina of Time. It is not a big, but a pleasant surprise that you can get it in Tears of the Kingdom. Everything you need to know about it, we got here for you.
As you maybe remember from Breath of the Wild, in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom the Hylian Shield is hidden somewhere in Hyrule , so you could easily miss it – and that would be a shame. After all, the shield has not only an iconic look, but also pretty good stats.
The Hylian Shield In Tears of the Kingdom
First, it's a shield, and you can use it, as any other shield in TotK. Meaning, you could fuse things like bomb flowers on it or shield surf. But you should be careful! Like any other shield, the Hylian Shield too can break. Luckily it is one of the sturdiest shields in the game, so if you just use it as a shield and resign the idea of fusing stuff like bomb flowers on it, it will last you for a while. With a +90 defense boost, it would be best to have it last!
If it should break, it seems to be possible to rebuy the Hylian Shield from Cece, after finishing the mayoral quests in Hateno.

How To Get The Hylian Shield
In fact, you can get the shield pretty soon – as soon as you got the Paraglider. You could also use Ultrahand and build some sophisticated boat if you want to, but it's easier with the Paraglider.
The Hylian Shield is located underneath Hyrule Castle, in the docks (that's obviously why the boat would work too). You don't have to fight to get the shield, unlike with items like Majora's Mask, but you'll need some stamina for the glider or skills in building vehicles with Ultrahand. Start at the north side of Hyrule Castle, near the Irch Plain, and take a look at your map, where you'll find an opening in the water, northwest of the castle.
So, now you could drop down to the docks and build your boat, a few wooden planks are right there for you to do so but feel free to create something fancy with Zonai devices you got with you. Or you simply get a to a higher point and glide into the open cave mouth in the middle of the moat to get inside the docks. Now just follow the path, up the ramp until you find a tall but unlit brazier atop the docks.
Again, you've got different possibilities to light the brazier, depending on what you've got on you. Fire Fruit, Red Chuchu Jelly or again go for the simple way and light up your own torch or wooden weapon of your choice. That's all you've got to do! As soon you've lit the torch a chest will emerge from the ground an in it, you'll find the Hylian Shield. Congratulations!
