Riot is Optimizing Maokai for the Jungle

Maokai has been a menace in the bot lane as of late. Those saplings and his CC abilities make him a great support champion, but Riot is looking to make him a jungler once more.

Maokai was once a jungler. Can you believe that? These days, we only ever see the scary tree from the Shadow Isles in the bot lane alongside an ADC as their support. His kit is perfect, especially against tanky supports. Just build Liandry's, and you burn them down slowly.

But now, it seems like Riot is looking to make some big changes on his kit to help the champion out and make him a viable pick in the jungle as well. Four of his five abilities are currently being tested on the PBE server so let's see what we have in store for jungle Maokai in LoL Patch 12.17.

LoL Patch 12.17: Maokai Jungle Buffs

As already mentioned, Maokai hasn't seen much play in the jungle as of late, which means that it's time to give him some huge adjustments, so he's able to go toe-to-toe with some of the best in the game right now. So, what does Riot have planned for Maokai?

Sappling Toss (E)
  • [REMOVED] % Max Health Damage
  • [ADJUSTED] Base Damage Total: 20-120 --> 45-185 (+35%AP + 3%tHP)
  • [ADJUSTED]Brush Damage Total: 40-240 --> 75-295 (+70%AP + 6%tHP)
  • [NEW] Empowered damage does not affect minions (but does affect jungle monsters)
  • [BUFF] Mana Cost: 60/70/*80/90/100 --> 45/55/65/75/85
  • [BUFF] Damage AP ratio and Slow Amount: 35% --> 42.5%
  • Empowered Damagae AP Ratio reduced from 90% --> 85%
  • [NEW] Empowered Brush Slow Amount: 55%
Nature's Grasp (R)
  • [BUFF] Missile Initial Speed: 50 --> 100
  • [BUFF] Missile Max Speed: 650 --> 750
  • [BUFF] Missile Acceleration: 250 --> 300
  • [NEW] Move Speed on Champion hit: 40-60% movement speed decaying over 2s

Maokai Jungle Update Release

These changes are currently being tested on the PBE server. If you're curious how this is going to feel, then make sure to get yourslef a PBE account for League of Legends – it's pretty simple. You can also just wait for this to go onto the live servers with LoL Patch 12.17.
