GTA V is over a decade old and has been released multiple times on almost every platform – except Nintendo Switch and mobile. Now, a group of modders are looking to change that.
In December 2023, the source code for GTA 5 was unexpectedly released after a major security breach at Rockstar. This newfound accessibility of the code has opened the door for modders to take on challenging tasks, such as creating full game ports that don't officially exist yet.
GTA 5 Modders Take On Unconventional Platforms
Using that code, a dedicated group of gamers has taken on the challenge of adapting Grand Theft Auto 5 to run on unconventional platforms such as the Switch, Linux, and Android.According to reports from GTA Focal, these modders have made progress in their endeavor, as evidenced by a snippet of a loading screen shared on Twitter/X on March 28.

The footage shows the familiar loading screen from GTA 5, occasionally interrupted by error messages from the Switch's interface. Accompanying the footage is a screenshot showing an error message from an attempted load on an Android device.
Since GTA 5 was originally developed for the Xbox 360/PS3, the Switch should theoretically have enough power to support the game. Still, the process of ensuring compatibility with different hardware remains a considerable undertaking.
