On March 22, Capcom is releasing Dragon’s Dogma 2 and I personally am incredibly hyped for it. It’s shaping up to be one of the best games of the year and another homerun for Capcom. However, some concerns have started to come up about the games potential performance on consoles, potentially dampening excitement for the game.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Could Have Framerate Issues On Consoles

In a recent discussion, tech experts Digital Foundry took a closer look at Dragon’s Dogma 2, while also talking about their own experience with the game. One thing they discuss is the game’s framerate, which could potentially run into issues on console.

In the footage we have seen so far, as well as presentations that the Digital Foundry members have seen behind closed doors, an unstable framerate that swings between 30 and 60 frames per second (FPS) was noticeable. Discussing the potential performance of the game, panelist Alex Battaglia suggests that the game could have a 30 FPS lock on consoles.

“I would not be surprised if there was a 30 FPS [cap]… please don’t do an unlocked framerate mode. That’s something that they don’t tend to do in their games, they tend to only give unlocked framerates. Please give us the ability to lock down framerates [to 30 FPS].”

While this would be disappointing, as console gaming on 60 FPS has become more common in this generation, the guys at Digital Foundry raise some good points here. Taking the large scale of Dragon’s Dogma 2 into account, and some of the technical features that Capcom could be working with here, like the RE Engine's version of Ray Tracing, the game could be quite demanding in terms of hardware.

The Dragon’s Dogma 2 PC requirements (which have 30 FPS with a 4K resolution posted as the target performance for recommended specs) are quite hefty as well, indicating that the game could end up being quite resource hungry.

A lot of people probably don’t want to hear it, but smooth 30 FPS with fewer technical limitations and graphical downgrades is preferable over an uncapped, unstable framerate or a worse-looking game. Thankfully, the PC version of Dragon’s Dogma 2 will at least feature massive technical improvements over previous Capcom games. So here’s hoping that on console, the developers will find some good solutions as well.
