Yellowstone will end with season 5, so the second part of the season marks the end of an era with its upcoming release. The show further hits rough waters with Kevin Costner's departure before the show even finished – to soften the blow from that, we've got the ultimate Yellowstone spinoff guide for you.
Yellowstone surely hit a rough patch during the final sprint for the show. The release of season 5 was delayed by the Hollywood strikes and the feud between the show's creator Taylor Sheridan and the head of the Dutton family, John Dutton – or, rather, with his actor Kevin Costner.
With Yellowstone coming to an end with Season 5 Part 2, fans were hoping to see the Duttons in all of their glory again, but chances are we'll have to make do without Kevin Costner.
Kevin Costner Leaves Yellowstone Before Season 5 Part 2 Comes Out
Watching the whole dispute go down was nearly as nerve-wracking as the Yellowstone itself. Due to differences between lead actor Kevin Costner and the show's creator Taylor Sheridan, the actor has decided not to return for the final episodes of Yellowstone Season 5.
That's unfortunate for a lot of reasons, but it's also going to be a challenge to make it make sense on screen. John Dutton wasn't done with his story yet when the first part of the last season finished. Chances are they will write out his character and finish the show without him.
There are a few possibilities how they're going to do that, ranging from killing him off in the old-fashioned way or sending him to jail off-screen and everything in between. So far, these are mere speculations though, and we'll have to wait and see for the finale to release to see how they'll handle Costner's departure.
Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2: Release Window
We're still waiting for an official release date to report, but as far as Paramount's plans go, we're still on track. According to those plans, Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 is set to release in November 2024.
With or without Costner, that's the last we'll see from the main show. While a sixth season is off the table, that doesn't mean the Yellowstone universe is done, though – it continues to grow with a whole bunch of spinoffs.
No Season 6, But Yet Another Spinoff: "6666"
Yellowstone's massive success has led to a few spinoffs already (scroll down to read more about them if you somehow missed them at the time) and Sheridan has even more in store.
Under the working title "6666", the spinoff has been confirmed to be a kind-of-sequel to Yellowstone. Other than the rest of the spinoffs, 6666 won't be exclusive to Paramount+, but will also get a cable release.
If and how the Duttons will play a part in that spinoff show remains to be seen. There's also no release date to report just yet, but rest assured that Yellowstone will continue one way or another.
6666 is currently put on hold, though. We'll keep you updated as soon as production kicks off!
Two More Spinoffs Have Finally Been Confirmed: 1944 and 2024
After months of guessing and a rumor mill in overdrive, it's finally confirmed: there are two more spinoffs in the works at Paramount, titled 1944 and 2024. That means one of them has to deal with the aftermath of WW II while the other takes on the present day at Dutton Ranch.
The spinoffs face their very own challenges, though. Previously, it's been reported that none other than Matthew McConaughey was supposed to lead one of the spinoffs, but recent developments show that this might not be set in stone after all.
The reason is quite simple: apparently, McConaughey hasn't seen a script yet. Hence, he has not decided whether to join the Yellowstone family or not. If the script is up to his standards, though, chances are that Matthew McConaughey will play the Dutton of the day.
The Ultimate Guide To The Yellowstone Spinoffs
If you're a busy Duttonhead, you might want to check out the first spinoff 1883 that follows John's ancestors, with Tim McGraw starring as James Dutton. Being a ten episode long miniseries, it's binge-able on Paramount+.
Also set in the 1880s is the latest Yellowstone spinoff: "Lawmen: Bass Reeves" that came out in November 2023. David Oyelowo plays Bass Reeves, a real-life marshal back in the 1880s. The real Reeves was one of the first black deputy U.S. marshals.
The next spinoff ready to watch is also set in the past, hence the name 1923. Harrison Ford portrays the Dutton of the moment, Jacob Dutton, dealing with lots of troubles you've probably heard about in history class: the end of World War I, Prohibition and the first taste of the Great Depression.
Be warned, though: the series is not finished yet. Season 1 is on Paramount+, but if you're not up for having another Yellowstone-y season to anticipate, you might want for the release of season 2, probably coming in 2024.
So, there are some shows to watch for Yellowstone fans to pass the time until season 5 gets finished or one of the announced spinoffs finally hits the screens.
We'll obviously keep you updated on all things Yellowstone as soon as there's news to be reported!
