Well, it's so easy to make mistakes these days. We really believed that after FUT Birthday, the What If promo in Ultimate Team was coming. However, it seems like the event is not coming up after all.
In FIFA 21, EA Sports introduced the What If event, last year the promo went into the second round... and now? Well, if the current leaks are true – and they always are in FIFA 22 – then not all good things come in threes, at least with What If promos. FUT Fantasy comes out of nowhere and just replaces What If... but we leave the tracker here anyway, in case the promo was just pushed back a bit...We explain everything you need to know about the new promo, when it starts and how the upgrades work right here. Leeeet's gooo.
What Are What If Cards In FIFA 22?
If EA doesn't change too much (which we assume), What If players are boosted dynamic items that are eligible for an additional one-time +2 OVR upgrade based on their team fulfilling What If scenarios based on real life football criteria.
How Do What If Player Upgrades Work?
The What If upgrades are awarded differently depending on the position of the players on the field. The cards are divided into offensive and defensive players. The scenarios look like this:
- Attackers & Midfielders upgrade if the player’s club scores at least 6 total goals in their next 5 domestic league matches.
- Defenders & Goalkeepers upgrade if the player’s club keeps at least 1 clean sheet over their next 5 domestic league matches.
Tracking will start from the date and time they are first released into FIFA Ultimate Team. If a team plays on the same day as an item’s release, it will only count if the domestic league match kicks off after the item is released into the game. Players will only receive upgrades based on the criteria outlined above. So, no MOTM, POTM or TOTW will affect the What If cards.
You know this from the Headliners, only league games count. So forget the Champions League, for example... just like EA. Is Road to the Finals still coming...?
When Is The What If Release In FIFA 22?
Of course, EA hasn't given us an exact release date yet – and meanwhile we know why. It seems like we can't expect the What If promo to drop in FIFA 22 for the time being. Last year, the event started on February 26th, so it should have been released some time ago.
EXCLUSIVE What If Returns and will be the next FIFA 22 Promo It starts February 25th! Players are upgraded based on the goals and clean sheets of their teams.Excited?

When Will What If Players Be Upgraded?
After a What If player fulfills their upgrade requirement scenario, the player item will be updated on the following Wednesday.
What If Leaks – Which Players Will Get A Special Card?
Until now, it's still quiet around leaks. Of course, we keep an eye on all relevant Reddit accounts and Twitter leakers and will update the article as soon as there are some leaks. This year, it's not a question of whether there will be leaks, but just when they're out.
FIFA 22 What If Tracker: How Many Goals Do Attackers And Midfielders Have?
Of course, you always want to know, when an upgrade for the offensive players is coming. Therefore, we give you an overview here. You can always see how many games have already been played and how many goals have been scored. We take Jadon Sancho as an example. He was a What If player last season. Unfortunately, his OTW in FIFA 22 really sucks...
PLAYER | CLUB | GAMES | GOALS |
Jadon Sancho | Manchester United | 0/5 | 0/6 |
FIFA 22 What If Tracker: How Often Have Defenders And Goalkeepers Kept A Clean Sheet?
Of course, you always want to know, when an upgrade for the defensive players is coming. Therefore, we give you an overview here. You can always see how many games have already been played and how often they managed to keep a clean sheet. We take Pepe as an example. He was a What If player last season.
PLAYER | CLUB | GAMES | CLEAN SHEETS |
Pepe | FC Porto | 0/5 | 0/1 |
Which What If Cards Are Worth It?
Since these are individual player upgrades, but are awarded based on club performance, this is the main thing you should keep an eye on. A blatant player in a bad team is worthless. After all, the team has to perform in order to complete the scenarios. You always have to keep that in mind. So, rather get players who play in a club that's going wild this season. Maybe these candidates will manage to get their first special card in FIFA 22 through the What If event...
