Maybe you can remember that one time, you've got imprisoned in Cyrodiil and the emperor himself, Uriel Septim VII, had to use your cell as an escape route from the assassins who murdered his sons. Well, they've got him too, and the gates to Oblivion opened and the Daedra were let loose to wrack havoc upon Tamriel. Of course, you were the only one who could stop this.

That was 16 years ago. Although, memories of Oblivion have stuck within the gaming community and the love for this classic has never died. And so in 2012 some Oblivion-enthusiasts started to develop a mod to recreate Oblivion with the (back then new) Skyrim engine. Now, after 11 years, they're close to finishing their project and have released a video to show their progress and share what else is to be done.

Skyblivion: The Long Awaited Oblivion Remake Is Making Progress

The Elder Scrolls Renewal is as old as Oblivion itself. In 2007, it started as an experiment on a French modding forum, where they worked on importing Morrowind assets into the (back then new) Oblivion engine. This mod was released in 2010, and you can still download it for free, as long as you own Oblivion and Morrowind with all DLCs. The same will go for Skyblivion. You'll need both games as a non-cracked version with all DLCs, but since it's a mod it will be free.

What you can expect from it, you can check out here. We've summarized what they've already achieved for you, but feel free to take a look at their video to get hyped for this remake.

Open world: Of the nine regions in Cyrodiil six are already completed. On top of that, eleven of the 40 unique locations, like the Oblivion-planes, are completed. This means that the entire game world is 82.7% complete.

Buildings: Although pretty on the outside, the inside of most buildings, like caves, shops and castles aren't finished. 260 of the in total 600 inner areas are completed.

Objects: Due to legal reasons, the developers have to build all assets by themselves, which is really time-consuming. But 1.893 from a total of 2.508 objects are already done.

NPC-movement: One third of the navigational mesh for the enemies and animals is already done, and NPCs and quests in these areas are already fully working.

Quests: Out of the 199 quests in Oblivion, 97 are already playable – and we might be lucky to get some additional quests!

Soundtrack: All original tracks from Jeremy Soule that were in Oblivion will be in Skyblivion with an addition of 17 tracks for individual regions and dungeons.

Up until the release, some time in 2025, the team will focus on Oblivion itself, not the DLC Shivering Islands. After the release of Skyblivion they'll take care of that and add it later on. If you're as hyped as I am and want to support them, I've got bad news: although you can join their Discord, they don't take donations but are always looking for volunteers, so maybe it's worth to take a look if you're a passionate modder yourself!

It's been over ten years since Skyrim was released, and we're still waiting for The Elder Scrolls VI but thanks to modders or in this case developers we'll never run out of content. There are also entirely new games based on the Skyrim engine and available as mods as Enderal for example. So you'll surely find something to play until Skyblivion or TES VI are released.

Speaking of Skyrim mods, have you heard of this one?
