Darth Malak is returning in the Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake. That’s right, KOTOR is coming back for the PlayStation 5 and PC. It’s being developed by Aspyr and LucasFilm Games, who previously worked with each other on KOTOR’s mobile port. Needless to say, this announcement was exciting for millions of international gamers.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic was an international success with more than 1.3 million copies sold. It’s expected that the remake will experience a similar level of international success for the PlayStation 5 and PC. Pre-orders aren’t available to date, and nobody can accurately predict the KOTOR remake’s financial success.

Unfortunately, little information on this upcoming remake has been provided by Aspyr or LucasFilm Games. All we’ve received is an announcement trailer during the 2021 September PlayStation Showcase Event. Since then, minimal updates have been provided by either company. Fortunately, we’ve compiled what information is available for you below.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake Release Date

Don’t expect the KOTOR Remake to arrive in 2023, as there haven't been any announcements to suggest this MMORPG is coming by next year. It’s known that Aspyr is in the early development of KOTOR, meaning that Knights of the Old Republic shouldn’t launch before 2024/25. However, our predictions are purely speculative and shouldn’t be taken as fact.

But even that late date might not be reached. A new report by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg revealed that the development of the KOTOR remake is currently on hold. Aspyr fired the game's art director and design director, the state of the development is unclear and looking shaky. Read all about this story here.

Game Setting, Story, And Everything We Know About KOTOR Remake

Four thousand years before Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, there was Darth Malak. He was an imposing Sith Lord known to overcome any obstacle thrown his way. However, this would change after the events of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic. Numerous Jedi from across the galaxy joined forces to defeat Darth Malak and learn about the Star Forge.

Nobody expected the revelation that your character is secretly Darth Revan in an amnesiac state. For those unaware, Darth Revan was considered the most powerful Sith Lord before Darth Malak. And this leads to everyone having to make an unexpected decision, with that being to join the light or dark side of the force.

Choosing the light side results in Darth Malak being destroyed and you being hailed a galactic hero. But choosing the dark side means the destruction of Darth Malak and the reclaiming of your title as Darth Revan, Mandalorian Sith.

It’s noted that beyond the storyline, Aspyr and LucasFilm Games are taking the development of KOTOR seriously. It’s being redesigned from the ground up, as revealed by Lead Producer Ryan Treadwell. He stated:

We’re rebuilding one of the greatest RPGs of all time for a new generation with modern tech, features, visuals and more while maintaining the integrity of the story and characters that we’ve come to cherish.

Is Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Coming To Xbox Series X/S And PC?

As previously mentioned, the KOTOR Remake is being launched as a timed exclusive with the PlayStation 5 and PC. This means Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic won’t be exclusive to the PS5 for a prolonged period. Eventually, it’ll be made available on the Xbox Series X/S and Steam Deck.

There’s even the possibility of Aspyr launching this upcoming game for the Nintendo Switch. However, most rumors have suggested this isn’t possible. Don’t get your hopes up for a mobile port beyond the Steam Deck.

Is Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Part Of Xbox Game Pass?

Unfortunately, we don’t believe the KOTOR Remake will launch onto the Xbox Game Pass. LucasFilm Games hasn’t released their titles through the Xbox Game Pass unless those titles were developed under Electronic Arts.

That’s why Battlefront, Jedi Fallen Order, and Squadrons are available for download today. But you’ll notice that beyond the development of Electronic Arts, there isn’t anything available on the Xbox Game Pass that LucasFilm Games designed.

Is Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Coming To The Steam Deck?

We’re confident that the Steam Deck will be capable of running Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, as we’ve seen this portable console perform with some incredible games like God of War and Elden Ring.

If this mobile handset can manage such games, it would make sense for the KOTOR Remake to be supported. Unfortunately, there haven’t been any announcements to suggest that Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is launching as a Steam Deck Verified Game.

Installing KOTOR onto the Steam Deck could be more complicated than one expected. However, you needn’t worry; we’ll update you with the installation process once more information is known.

Game Trailer

“Peace is a lie; that is what the Sith believe. They promise power, and now, they wield it. We face the greatest Sith in generations; they must be stopped.”

This is what we’re told as the announcement trailer for Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic unfolds. Unfortunately, gameplay footage wasn’t provided for the upcoming remake. Instead, we were provided with a glimpse of the updated character model for Darth Revan.

This is surprising, considering we’ll face off against Darth Malak. We guess Aspyr, and LucasFilm Games are saving the best for last. Aren’t you excited? We are!
