A GTA 6 PC version has not been officially confirmed yet. However, Rockstar’s history indicates that players shouldn’t have to wait for too long.
GTA 6 was finally revealed and wow, wasn’t that exciting? Everyone and their dog watched the reveal trailer and is rightfully looking forward to Rockstar Games’ next epic crime saga. Unfortunately, PC players will have to wait longer than anyone else, as the game is only launching on current-gen consoles when it comes out in 2025.
However, a PC version will definitely come down the line. It’s only a matter of time. Looking at Rockstar’s release history and a recent acquisition of theirs, there are plenty of reasons to be hopeful.
When To Expect The GTA 6 PC Version
GTA 6 will most likely come to PC in 2026, one year after the initial console launch of the game in 2025. If you take a look at Rockstar’s previous mega releases, you will see that the PC version usually takes a year to follow up on the console releases.
Rockstar Game | Console Release Date | PC Release Date |
Grand Theft Auto 4 | April 29, 2008 | December 2, 2008 |
Grand Theft Auto 5 | September 17, 2013 | April 14, 2015 |
Red Dead Redemption 2 | October 26, 2018 | November 5, 2019 |
Why it takes so long is unclear, as Rockstar is very secretive, and we know very little about how they develop their games. Thankfully, York Reacts on YouTube made a whole video talking about this exact topic. He used to work at Rockstar so he knows what he’s talking about here.
According to the video, Rockstar prioritizes getting the console release perfectly right first, as this market is much bigger for them. Optimization is also very difficult with games as big and complex as the ones Rockstar makes. PC versions need to run on all kinds of configurations, and optimizing for that is difficult for almost any video game, let alone one as complicated as GTA.
A Recent Acquisition Could Give Fans Hope
This should still not mean that Rockstar is ignoring the PC fanbase. One recent acquisition could even point towards the developer catering more to PC players. In August 2023, Rockstar acquired Cfx.re, a team running the popular roleplay servers FiveM for GTA Online and RedM for Red Dead Online.
While roleplaying is hugely popular in these games, all of the servers for it were fan-run so far. It looks like Rockstar is looking towards integrated this aspect of the game more officially into their coming online experiences. Hopefully that means that GTA 6 will have official and better integration of roleplaying mechanics.
This could also mean that Rockstar will hopefully get the PC version done and released sooner rather than later. Do you think that will happen, or that PC players will have to wait even longer than we anticipate? Let us know in the comments!
