Five Resident Evil Games Reportedly In Development, "Including RE9"

Capcom seems to double down on the recent success of Resident Evil, as a leaker claims a whopping five new titles are in development.

Capcom has been on a hot streak since 2017’s release of Resident Evil 7. Since then, every major release has been a banger, especially in the legendary survival-horror series. Most recently, the Resident Evil 4 remake had huge success and was touted as one of the best games of 2023. The Japanese games company wants to keep striking while the iron is hot and is apparently working on five new Resident Evil titles.

Resident Evil 9 And Four Other Games In The Franchise Are Coming, Claims Leaker

This was revealed by Dusk Golem, one of the most-reliable leakers concerning all things Capcom. While their claims are not always perfectly spot-on, the info can usually be trusted. On their Discord, Golem said they “know of 5 RE games in dev right now, including RE9”. Resident Evil 9 is not much of a surprise, considering that Resident Evil Village sold over 8.7 million copies in little more than a year.

According to DuskGolem, there's at least 5 Resident Evil games in development.

Among the other four projects, fans can expect another batch of remakes. A Resident Evil 5 re-imagining seems to be a given, considering that RE4 Remake teases that at the end. For the rest, fans have been speculating wildly on what it could be. Reddit user East_Home_4107 had the most upvoted comment on a Reddit thread about the potential releases, saying they expect “CV [Code Veronica], 5, REV3 [Revelations 3], Outbreak and a Hunk game".

Resident Evil Code Veronica is an outlier title released in 2000 and originally developed as Resident Evil 3. A lot of fans have been asking for it to be remade ever since Resident Evil 2’s new version popped off. The same goes for the 2002 remake of the original Resident Evil, which fans want to see in the style of the modern remakes.

Resident Evil's Commercial Success

Did you know that six of Capcom’s Top 10 all-time bestsellers are Resident Evil games?

#9: Resident Evil 3 Remake (8 million units)
#8: Resident Evil Village (8.7 million units)
#7: Resident Evil 6 (8.9 million units)
#6: Resident Evil 5 (8.9 million units)
#4: Resident Evil 7 (12.7 million units)
#3: Resident Evil 2 (13.10 million units)

Outside of that, the expected releases seem to be some kind of spin-off (even though I find Revelations to be unlikely), a new multiplayer game like the beloved Outbreak and a previously leaked game featuring super soldier Hunk. He is a weird character, mainly known from the Mercenaries modes featured in Resident Evil 4 and 5 and never got a dedicated game.

For one of the projects, Dusk Golem expects a release window of "late 2026/2027", but they aren't saying which one that is for. In terms of new remakes, it looks like we will have to wait at least until 2025, as there are reportedly none planned to release this year.

In the meantime, check out Capcom's next hit:

It makes sense that Capcom wants to keep feeding the best that is Resident Evil. Every game in the series is a commercial hit, and player consensus has generally been extremely positive since RE7. Just recently, the company revealed that Resident Evil 4 Remake has sold 6.4 million copies in under a year, another very impressive success for the series.

What do you think about Capcom making so many Resident Evil games? Is it too much, or are you excited for them? And what do you expect to get here? Let us know in the comments!
