Nintendo hasn’t said anything about their next console, colloquially referred to as the Switch 2, yet. However, more and more rumors and reports are coming out on the console, slowly painting a picture of what fans can expect when it releases (apparently) later this year.

The newest revelation comes from industry analyst Hiroshi Hayase of Omdia, a global research company in the tech sector, and concerns the screen that the Switch successor will ship with.

According to Hayase, as reported by Bloomberg, the Switch 2 will launch with an 8-inch (20.32 cm) LCD screen. While this is a huge improvement in terms of sheer size, it’s disappointing to see Nintendo opt for an LCD screen instead of an OLED one.

Hayase’s “research focuses on small and medium displays” according to the report and as part of his work has checked on the state of these displays for the year 2024, which are set to double in shipments. This is apparently due to the launch of the much-anticipated new Nintendo console.

Screen size comparison

The Switch 2 screen is set to be much bigger than comparable handhelds:

  • Nintendo Switch — 6.2 inches (15.75 cm)
  • Switch OLED — 7 inches (17.78 cm)
  • Steam Deck LCD — 7 inches (17.78 cm)
  • Steam Deck OLED — 7.4 inches (18.8 cm)

This news caused mixed reactions. The massive increase in the size of the screen will undoubtably be great, but OLED screens are seen as far superior to LCDs. And if you have ever seen a standard Switch next to an OLED Switch, you will have to agree that the latter is indeed offering a much better experience.

The biggest advantages of OLED screens over LCD are their ability to display true blacks and higher contrast ratios due to the self-lighting pixels, and their wide viewing angles with consistent color and contrast, offering a superior visual experience. Additionally, OLED's faster response time eliminates motion blur, making video games feel really smooth and responsive.

So far, Nintendo has not responded to this report, any other report or any requests for comment.
