Assassin's Creed Odyssey is legit the best AC game that Ubisoft has created. I know you'll disagree with me, but hear me out first.
I bet you're excited about Assassin's Creed Mirage, right? You're excited about going back to the roots, back to what AC used to be with the parkour and the linear storyline? Well... I'm not. Let me explain why.
I absolutely hated the first three Assassin's Creed games. I know that this is very controversial, and I know that as loyal fans to the series, you will want to destroy me for this statement, but I think one of the main reasons why I just never liked them was because I started playing AC way later than everyone else. I started with Syndicate.
And boy... I loved that game so much. As a fan of Peaky Blinders, AC:Syndicate was the perfect game for me. I loved Evie and Jacob and I loved how Ubisoft had different quests depending on who of the twins you were playing. It was... amazing.
Right after that, I thought: okay, I'm invested, let me try out all the games and play through them until the next installment comes out.
So, here I was, jumping into the first Assassin's Creed and thinking... where is the open world? Where are the quests? Why is the parkour so freaking wobbly?
If you grow up with a game as old as AC, you will probably not care about these things because you were already used to it. But imagine this: you start out with an iPhone 14 Max and then your grandma buys you a Motorola flip phone. You will think: "what am I supposed to do with this now?!" right?
So, after I realized that I absolutely couldn't play through the first couple of games (and by the way, I absolutely despise Desmond), I still started working my way up. I felt like I somehow owed it to the series to experience it all. However, the old games just didn't do it for me. Black Flag was the first game where I was kinda okay again, but it wasn't until Origins came out that I thought: yes... this is what I've been missing.
Fast-forward to AC: Odyssey. I'm invested, I'm thinking these are the kinda AC games that I want, and I am not disappointed. The open world, the parkour, the skills, the quests, the stealth. I loved it all. Above all, the mythology factor that started to come in Origins did the trick for me in Odyssey. I'm a sucker for Greek mythology and that game did that fantastically.
I know that many fans of the series feel like the latter games aren't true to the original style of Assassin's Creed and I see what they mean. However, I just can't get behind the original style. It's ultimately all about personal taste, but I'd much rather have an open world where I can be the boss of the story than have everything programmed out for me.
So great, you're excited about Assassin's Creed: Mirage, good for you and I'm genuinely happy that you get to have a game that takes you back to what it used to be. But I'd much rather wait for AC: Codename Red and get the feeling of AC: Odyssey back. Because that game is by far the best Assassin's Creed game that Ubisoft has ever created.
This game also looks good though, not gonna lie...
