Assassin's Creed Infinity Explained – Latest News & Leaks
At the Ubisoft Forward 2022, the first official details about Assassin's Creed Infinity were revealed. It turns out that Infinity won't be a game, but rather a sort of hub or launcher, containing new Assassin's Creed games and "experiences". Ubisoft released a statement explaining what exactly Infinity will be:
Infinity is not a game, per-se. It’s going to be the single entry point for our fans into the Assassin’s Creed franchise into the future. Infinity is going to be a hub that will unite all our different experiences and our players together in meaningful ways.
Update, February 2024
A new report by Insider Gaming recently revealed exactly what Infinity is about. According to "demo footage" obtained through anonymous sources, Infinity is a hub that is used to switch between AC experiences.
Several upcoming titles have been announced, which will be part of Infinity: the Japan-set and Shinobi-themed AC Red, the darker, witchcraft inspired game with the codename Hexe, and the mobile title Jade. Ubisoft released a roadmap for the future of Assassin's Creed, including the codenamed titles as part of Infinity. It reveals that AC Mirage was the last proper standalone game in the series. Everything coming afterward will be released under the Infinity umbrella. Here's the roadmap:
How Infinity Will Tell The Modern-Day Animus Story
Project lead Marc-Alexis Côté tried to clarify what Infinity will end up being, but... things are still confusing. He emphasized that you will still be able to buy titles like Red or Hexe as single games, with physical versions. But once you start them, Infinity will pop up. It is supposed to function as a sort of hub for the coming AC games, which hosts the standalone titles while also offering additional content.
But Infinity won't just be a window where you select the game you want to play. It will rather be an in-universe Animus interface, with the available products represented as different memories you can jump into. It is supposed to be a malleable platform, which will offer content outside the main games. Through this method, Ubisoft plans to continue telling the modern-day story surrounding Abstergo, the Animus, Desmond Miles and so on.
This sounds like they are doing what a lot of fans have wanted forever: separate the cool history action and the often dire and kind-of boring modern day stuff. This separation is being emphasized by Côté as well:
People who love just immersing themselves in the past will be able to jump right in there and never be interrupted or need to know who Desmond and Layla are. The way we tell the story will evolve with time. But the abstraction that we want people to have is your Animus. It is your DNA Explorer on your desktop. You are the main story character.
An example of how Infinity will tell this part of the story, that has been revealed by Ubisoft and Côté, are the codex entries. These used to be available in-game, but will be part of Infinity now. What other methods Infinity will use for storytelling has still not been revealed, with Côté explaining that the methods, and the platform in general, will develop over time.
Multiplayer Will Come Back & Some Content Might Be Free
Infinity is supposed to offer different experiences from the main titles like Red and Hexe. On the roadmap, Jade and the as-of-yet-untitled Netflix collaboration have also been included within Infinity. The aim of Ubisoft is to diversify the brand and offer a variety of different experiences.
But even outside the game, this new hub is supposed to be a breeding ground for different types of AC-related content. Côté talks of "free experiences", which haven't been further detailed though. Multiplayer is also supposed to come back within this system.
"Invictus" is the name of the standalone multiplayer off-shoot, which will be delivered to players through the Infinity hub. What exactly Invictus will be, is completely unclear yet. Whether the title will be one of the aforementioned free experiences is also still up in the air, but Cote doesn't exclude it as a "possibility". Here's how the multiplayer game is being described in its concept phase:
“I think the concept art that we had for Invictus [a piece of art shown at a press briefing that showed numerous characters from different games standing side-by-side] kind of hints to this possibility of crossing over characters from different periods. So I think you can see the intention there of Invictus allowing us again to bridge our different games together.”
Infinity will feature an item shop, titled "The Exchange" according to Insider Gaming's Tom Henderson. This shop will feature in-game cosmetics and items. Some form of battle pass, titled "Projects" will also be part of the live-service offering.
Potential Release Window
According to a report by Ubisoft, Assassin's Creed Codename Red is expected to come out between April 2024 and March 2025. The plan going forward seems to revolve around them releasing "a mainline game every two years, with smaller experiences in between".
With the launch of Red, Ubisoft is set to launch Infinity and use it as the Assassin's Creed platform moving forward.
