Star Wars Outlaws - New Mechanics
The new trailer for Star Wars Outlaws gave fans of the Star Wars Franchise enough to talk and think about for the next several weeks, as a 10-minute-long Gameplay video just dropped at Ubisoft's Forward Show.
In there, several new in-game mechanics and features were shown, alongside new characters and the decision system, which will influence your reputation in the galaxy. So let's take a look at them.
Fighting And Sneaking
The trailer starts with a fighting sequence, in which protagonist Kay Vess takes down a guard from behind with a single punch to the head, so special take down mechanics, while sneaking are in the game. This guard is a member of the Pyke Syndicate, a criminal organization in the Star Wars Universe.
While fleeing out of the Pyke Syndicate Base, Kay Vess uses her axolotl-companion Nix to distract other guards by sending him to activate a crane. There are special mechanics you can do with your companion, and Nix can even interact with certain objects in the game.
The next sequence is where the fun begins, Kay Vess gets spotted by a guard and the shooting starts. The game is played with a third-person-perspective and so you're aiming slightly above your shoulder. The crosshair is a simple dot with some outlines around it, which turns red when hitting an enemy. While fighting a shielded guard, you can see Vess changing something on her blaster, which destroys the energy shield and allows her, to defeat her opponent in melee combat, using her blaster to smash in his head.
Speeder Bike Chase
While fleeing from the enemy base, Vess is using her Speederbike, already shown in the last trailer, and getting chased by Gangsters on Speederbikes as well. Now we were able to see something like a slow motion mechanic, as Vess slows down the time, to aim from her Speederbike at the enemies. Similar to mechanics in other games, she can mark her opponents and gun them down with fast blaster-shots.
Decisions Making
The next scene features Kay Vess, a female imperial officer and a member of the Mon Calamari species, who was the quest giver. It's the first time that the trailer shows the decision-making mechanics in the game. Vess can choose between bribing the imperial officer or not. She decides to not do it, which ends in her fleeing from the place, getting chased by imperial troops.
Space Travel and Dogfighting
While fleeing in her freighter, the game shows a seemingless transition between the ground and the space environment. Here she gets attacked by several imperial TIE-Fighters and the dogfighting begins. The fighting seems to be similar to the mechanics of thr Star Wars Battlefront series. After destroying some of the TIEs, Vess gets her ship into hyperspace, in the classic Star Wars animation.
