We'll take you along and guide you through the "a high price to pay" mission, so you'll know what to do in your Starfield playthrough!
Keep in mind, that this article will include plenty of spoilers, so fair warning.
Starfield "A High Price To Pay" Walkthrough
As you'll probably already know, this is the eleventh mission in the main storyline of Starfield, but unlike all the missions that came before this one, you stand before two choices.
Both choices will lead to the same mission ending, but depending on which path you choose, it's possible that not everyone will make it.
It's probably a good idea to save before you head into this mission and stock up on ammo, just to be safe.
But before we dive into which choice paths you can choose from, let's start at the beginning.
How To Start "A High Price To Pay"
After you've completed the mission "No Sudden Moves", going back to The Lodge and placing an Artifact will trigger the start of the mission.

Once you've placed the Artifact, you can no longer leave The Lodge, and Vladimir will try and initiate communication with you from The Eye. Since you can't leave The Lodge from here on out, your only way to continue the mission is by speaking to Noel.
After you've talked to Noel, Vladimir will tell you and the rest of the Constellation group that he and three other Constellation companions are aboard The Eye and are being attacked by a Starborn (no, not Lady Gaga. That's A Star Is Born. Keep up people).
What makes matters worse is that Vladimir warns you that this Starborn in question is The Hunter, and he's on his way to The Lodge right now to pick up some Artifacts for himself.

But, one of the three Constellation companions aboard The Eye is gravely injured and needs immediate medical attention.
What will you do: Defend The Lodge or Go to The Eye?
Which path you choose at this point will determine which companion of yours makes it out alive. I'm sorry to say this, but you won't be able to save everyone from death in this mission.
Now, here's something important to note before you make your decision.
The three companions that are on The Eye are those with which you have the highest relationship with, so if you'll go to The Eye, you'll try and save your closest friends.
On the other hand, while the last companion that's in The Lodge with you is the one that you have the lowest relationship with, Noel, Matteo, Vasco and Walter are also there and will try to defend the Artifact from getting into The Hunter's hands.

No matter which path you pick, the story will continue on the same, you'll just lose a different companion depending on where you go.

But here's a quick rundown of the events of the rest of the mission:
Defend The Lodge
Should you decide to stay and defend the Artifact from The Hunter in The Lodge, he'll eventually come round by camouflaging himself and taking Walter hostage. What happens after is this:
- Noel will try to take the Artifact apart while The Hunter attacks you and the other Constellation members. Fight him to get a strong weapon, but don't waste your ammo, since he can't be killed during this mission.
- As soon as Noel has taken the Artifact apart, follow her and the others down to the basement towards The Well. Do not fight The Hunter, otherwise you'll be killed.
- Go to New Atlantis' Spaceport and board your ship to fly to The Eye.
- Once inside, you'll find out that your closest companion/spouse is dead.
If you want to avoid your closest companion dying, you might want to go to The Eye instead.
Go To The Eye
To save your close companions, you'll have to rush out the front door as soon as you hear the news about what has befallen The Eye. Even if your companion in The Lodge tries to stop you, continue forth, but keep in mind that there's no turning back from now on. After that, all you have to do is:
- Run to the Spaceport and fly to The Eye
- Find your injured, but alive, companions. They're safe now.
- Return to The Lodge and find out that your companion with the lowest relationship is dead. The others are injured, but are safe.
- From here, the events of the first path will repeat.
