Ghost of Tsushima is one of Sony’s most amazing creations that released in 2020 exclusively on PS4 and PS5. Of course, the word ‘exclusive’ is a flexible term, as Ghost of Tsushima seems to be coming to PC. Naturally, a game this successful will not only be ported to other platforms, but also get a sequel.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Quick Facts
Release:TBA
Platform:Most Likely PS5 (TBA)
Developer:Sucker Punch Productions

That a sequel to one of the best samurai games will come is beyond reasonable doubt. The question is, when can we expect it? After Sony Group President Hiroki Totoki revealed that the company does not plan to release new games in existing franchises until March 2025, great disappointment spread among the Ghost of Tsushima fans. No sequel until 2025? There is reason to hope that Ghost of Tsushima 2 could still come in 2024.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Might Be Coming To PS5 Sooner Than We Thought

The game designer and author Jeff Grubb caught the attention of Ghost of Tsushima fans with a tweet.

In response to a comment mentioning that at least 2 AAA titles from Sony will be released this year, he replied that "there are other unannounced games from established IPs."

So there are two statements that seem to contradict each other. But even if Grubb is correct, we don't know if he was referring to Ghost of Tsushima 2. So take this information with a grain of salt.

Ghost of Tsushima 2: News, Story, Characters & More

Here we gather all the information available to us about Ghost of Tsushima 2. Additionally, we speculate about the content that could await us in the upcoming sequel. These are not confirmed details, but merely stuff we could imagine being featured.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Release Window

There is no word on a Ghost of Tsushima 2 release date. There also still isn't an official announcement from the developers of Sucker Punch. We will update this article as soon as we have any new information.

Why We Know That Ghost of Tsushima 2 Is Coming

First and foremost, the first installment was a massive success for Sony and the American development studio. Fans have passionately expressed their insatiable appetite for the exquisitely crafted open world of Ghost of Tsushima, so it's a no-brainer for both developers and publishers to release a sequel.

The speculation was quickly accompanied by clear indications from Sucker Punch. On March 3, 2022, the game was inadvertently confirmed by Sucker Punch when they publically listed a job application that asked for "experience with Ghost of Tsushima" as a requirement.

Must have played Ghost of Tsushima and understand its core gameplay systems.

Ghost of Tsushima Story

Well, time to put on our writer’s hats and speculate: Will Ghost of Tsushima stay on the islands, or will it expand on the Mongol expansion? I personally think it will be none of the above, and the game should instead cover the war between China and Japan. Yes, it would be a departure from the current setting, but who’s to say that we have to continue the story of Jin Sakai?

After all, "the Ghost" is more of a symbol than a person, and the first game's ending doesn't necessarily leave much to the imagination, as Jin completes his journey in becoming the Ghost, by either giving his uncle an honorable death, or separating himself from the traditions.

The war between China and Japan could serve as fodder for more than just one game, and the franchise might even let us explore both sides of the war.

Alternatively, a story mirrored after Miyamoto Musashi could be interesting: The band of brothers was already popular enough in Ghost of Tsushima, and letting you play as a lone vagabond would be interesting. Maybe an older Jin Sakai, who fell on tough times, took to drinking, and sells his sword to the highest bidder, only to get swept up in an adventure that triggers his sense of loyalty.

Ghost of Tsushima Gameplay

The gameplay in the original Ghost of Tsushima was already tight, so there isn’t too much to improve here. Since the game most likely will release on the PS5 or even the PS5 Pro, the natural strengths of the system will have an effect on the gameplay. We expect less floatiness, more weight, more combat variety and more difficulty. Of course, that’s an assumption, but it also seems like the natural progression of things.

More interesting is the idea that the Ghost of Tsushima sequel might involve multiplayer. After all, Ghost of Tsushima Legends was extremely popular and well-made, despite being a free DLC. Sucker Punch could easily open up its open-world to be explored with a friend. Also, live-service games are becoming more and more popular, even reaching quadruple A status (Am I a little bit too sarcastic here?).

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Setting

I touched on it above, when talking about the story, but I would expect the setting to change. The Mongol conflict still offers more potential, but Japan as a whole has so much history that Sucker Punch could easily look into exploring a different historical chapter.

Aside from that, who’s to say that the game has to be set in Japan? China is rich in history too, and could easily be the setting of Ghost of Tsushima 2. Of course, the name would have to adapted, but ‘Ghost of X’ can easily be the franchise-name. It would also allow Sucker Punch to take a similar approach as Assassin’s Creed, and open the franchise up to limitless settings. Then again, having said that… I don’t know if that’s a good thing.

Ghost of Tsushima 2 Characters

As I have already said, Jin Sakai's story in becoming the Ghost is wonderfully concluded in the first installment. However, I could imagine him making a good return as a side character in Ghost of Tsushima 2.

Unless Jin’s story is somehow continued, there is no reason for him to return as a main protagonist. Anyone could pick up the mantle of the Ghost, so there is no telling who the main character in Ghost of Tsushima 2 could be.
